Evening all,

I had a CB when i was 14 (14 years ago) my little foray onto the air was a disaster owing mainly to no knowledge and no one to assist. I had a midland something with a mag mount on the biscuit tin in the loft. 5 mile range, no one to talk to.

I gave up.

I'm had a rig in the tractor since i left college and use it a fair bit while ploughing, harrowing etc. It gets it's ass kicked silage and maize time as well

The cru of the problem is this. I want a rig in my car, have no ide what to buy, (but i know where to get it... here clearly), I have no clue on how to fit it (hopeless with anything except farming),

I have a milion questions

Do i need to swr the aerial?
What aerial is best for mobile use
Am i goignt o have a repeat of my past disaster with a car instead of a biscuit tin
What can i do to get further (10 miles plus ideally)
SSB, USB, LSB, Skip, side band, WTH are these things?

Any help greatfully recieved

Hi Somerset boy,

Well first things first, I can't see it being a repeat of your past disaster, there are plenty of people to help you on here. And if you get really stuck you can call us for help :D

We do a few kits to help you out, that come with everything including the radio, antenna and cable so you dont need to worry about forgetting anything...

http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/sp.htm

The antenna we recommend is the Thunderpole Orbitor that comes with all the kits we sell. They are pre-tuned in the factory but as SWR varies vehicle to vehicle, we recommend you get an SWR meter to make sure. All the SWR meters we sell come with a guide which should talk you through it.

If you want 10 miles plus, you really need to think about upgrading to an antenna like the Wilson... http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/wilson-100 ... -5000.html

SSB - Single Side Band
USB - Upper Side Band
LSB - Lower Side Band
Skip - Talking much much further by using atmospheric conditions that happen every few years
Sideband - Type of modulation, like AM or FM but not legal to use on CB frequencies in the UK

Seriously though, if you are looking to use a standard CB in your car to talk locally all the above terms are not relevant at all, so don't worry about them.

Hopefully this has helped, if you do need more advice remember you can always call on 01604 402403.

Regards,

Andy

Hi again,

I've taken all that in and as soon as i get the chance will order my rig (with the bigger aerial)

As to fitting it, if any one can tell me where i coul get this done i'd be grateful. Is it possible to get a rig with cigartte lighter plug on the end? so i can fit it myself

Cheers

Hi again,

We don't provide a fitting service. Mainly to do with the fact that they are very easy to fit yourself.

We can attach the cigarette lighter plug for you for £1.50.

The easiest way to fit the antenna is with a magnetic mount, then it is easy to remove and put in the boot if you ever need to aswell.

The only other thing to do is route the cable from the radio to the antenna. But most people just run it through the door as it is thin enough.

Done!!

Now the proud owner of a used (other company) something, (well 2 actually) one is happily ensconced in my tractor, with a baby stinger on (second twig is wending it's way to me)

More importantly, second is just as happy in my car with a mag mount big stinger. Had a copy from a guy out of Albion truck stop near Bridgwater from just out side Langport (reckon that's about 10-12 miles) good eough for what i want.

Seems there are fewer folk about than i thought though.

Happy with all the kit from PMJ Comms in Trowbridge. Blinding and a Thunderpole dealer too

Yer Tiz then,

Have the CB on whenever i'm driving and getting a few copies. Most with the squelch turned right down (i guess this improves distance). If i want to improve this is it all aerial? or would a pre amp or (ahem no cant do that can i?) help at all?

Also given that licence is no longer required who if anyone monitors the air as i notice a lot of vulgarity. My question then is if no one monitors it who makes the rules and enforces them so i cant have an amp?

you can use a preamp with no problem but if you want a better set up upgrade the antenna for a start

Could CB radio operators login here with their call sign ? I am biscuit tin, then we could try and make contact via 27 Mhz .JC 26/3/25 .
