advice on cb set up
hope this is in the right place on the forum! this is my first post so hello to everyone. ive been after a set up for my vw camper for a while so the other week i saw a cheap cb (old looking general electric) at a boot sale. i bought a orbitor aerial and gutter mount from thunderpole and set the whole thing up on the van. switched the unit on but the signal recive strength (row of leds) seems to be low, only the first LED is flickering so i take it that the set up is wrong. the cb could be faulty but before i jump in and buy a new unit is there any way to see if my unit is faulty. ive been looking though this forum for the past few weeks and have read about the swr meters but surly i would be getting something through my set up. any advice would be much apprciated as im new to the cb world.
the gec cb you have got is american therfore on am frequancies youu will hear the irish truckers but not the uk ones no the set is not faulty because the light flickers you just arnt picking up a strong signal

hello and welcome 99leroy,
and welcome to the world of cb it is a bit confuseinf to start up useing cb radio,
your radio this depends on how old your radio is buddy if it is very old then it could be a am or mid band radio what was one of the first radios ever built and are only on those frequancies, untill the 70s when they brought out fm radios has stampman has said if you have a midband radio you will only be able to pick up anybody who users the midband frequancies not many people do as most people use the fm frequancy,
if you have checked your swr meter and if it is 1.5 or below then your radio will be safe to use and work well,
the only thing you can do realy is sit and wait for posable conctact and then you will be able to ask them what frequancy you are on and ask them for a radio report.
apart from all of that good luck and i hope you all the best with everything leroy buddy.
