If like me you have been disappointed at the mod volume of your Alan 42 (FM Mode), here is a quick and easy way to solve the problem. I have attached a diagram of the component layout on the main board. You need to locate the variable resistor RV4. This is located on the left side of the board (antennae up) just below the on/off volume control. It is located inside part of the shielding on the circuit board. The deviation is increased by turning this control anti-clockwise. I had to turn mine all the way to get reasonable modulation on transmit. This diagram was provide by the Midland people in Italy so can be relied upon as accurate. My unit is now much easier to use as I don't have to shout to make myself heard. I hope this proves useful.

Be careful, dont mix up microphone gain VS fm deviation you will band splatter if its turned up more than 2.5khz max.
FM dev pot is not microphone audio gain, ive come across this far to much on cb screwdrivers when doing repairs.
IF the peak fm dev is good, but just lacks punch you need to change the feedback gain resistor on the mic preamp, its easy to do.
Service manual here http://www.cbradio.nl/alan/ServiceManua ... _Multi.pdf

Look at schematic,IC5a is mic preamp,R96 is the mic gain feedback resistor, increase value say 1.2mohm for more microphone gain.
it will drive the clipper diodes D17 harder and give you more punch.Set RV4 for max peak dev 2 to 2.5khz and no more.

this can be applied to most modern cb radios.

I rather show how to do correctly than have users causing problems to other radio users, hope this helps explain.
Always use a FM dev meter to set correctly.

Regards all
Bob
