my place of work use 70 mhz plus the only thing other than work i can hear at home is the 70mhz repeater for the fire brigade (due to my antenna limitations)

so i though, bite the bullet, i can still use the icom for cb and work (rx) and if i do my tests im set for ham (IF i do my tests ever)

was going to go yaesu 857d but no 70mhz mods.

so icom it is and boy its a good set, got it just before the price increase as its goin up to about 850 quid, got mine for 625.

ssb is brill, such a high standard of radio, i thought my 257 was good this is a whole new world, although i still use my 257.

only down point to the icom is it gets warm very warm but where i use it on the car the air vent comes out next to the main unit so air con on and it stays nice and cold

Was that £625 new price you paid for it,you can just tell the diffrence with the icom when you used the 257 before.you should try useing the icom pro 3 radio it gets even better.by the way what antenna are you useing on 555.

my mistake it was £650 new just looked at the reciept,

if the wind is up i use a 1/4 wave tank whip, if the weather is nice a 5/8th silver rod hy gain, (this is mobile/static)

home is a a-99 on the roof, flat area right next to the sea.

dont get me wrong the 257 is ok compaired to the ss 3900 but the icom is in another league is really good even with-out the upgraded ssb filter

whilst driving i only use uk 40 with the 257 and a little wil to keep it simple, i dont use the icom whilst driving about i leave it on the 70mhz work freq and lock everything, buttons and knobs are not good to play with whilst driving around

Were in the uk are you, sure the 257 / ss3900 may be ok if you want to play at radio. But now your buying better grade of radio in the icom, have you seen about the spare ssb filter for the radio. you find you can here more people than before you just need to inprove your antenna mate.even better if you live near the sea.

yer i will be looking into the ssb filter in the near future, also looking into a yagi for my choice of antenna but where i currently work weather is poor so im stuck with antennas as they easily fall in the wind

i work in herefordshire and live in kent i only go to kent every so often due to the distance.

i go to mid wales for my radio work as i have a nice high spot there, near a town called sennybridge.

what about yourself whered home for you?

well i cannot use it homebase so will just be used static mobile, hight is about 3.5 meters at the mo but am just in the process of making a bigger mast with tyre stand, got to go to town and get some gas for the welder

at the mo i use a speaker stand with guy ropes at the top then antenna on the very top.

you dont have much choice of antenna to use but if you want to use a beam still i would go for the siro 4 element and run a amp with with low loss coax cable. But dont be close to the antenna when you use it.it may work for you as its a all day job.
