Yeah, the 11m Super Resonator sits up on top of a mast on a ball joint on the car and is part of an HF mobile system - it's massive! Yes, it is mainly used by hams/amateurs but the 11m one is for CB radio. Can't use it whilst driving!! (The garage said it would have me roof off!!!) But it is great for dx!!!!

I like the sound of the DX thing.
I'm currently still a serving member of the Royal Corps of Signals and Radio Operator is my trade. However, when you've worked with masts and there associated boxes and bags, using one as part of a hobby makes me cringe!
The Army makes everything so it 'just fits' and no more. Trying to squeeze guy ropes back into their box along with hefty stakes and a base plate was a nause.
Do you tie off the guy ropes to the floor or is your vehicle adapted etc?
How big is the actual antenna? Does it sit on top of an 11m mast like a basestation antenna would sit on a house?
What is the mast made of? Do people DX with only four watts?
Sorry, loads of questions but this is quite interesting!
KInd regards.

Google HUSTLER MOBILE HF ANTENNA and click on images. They are big! Where I live we can get very windy weather and I can't use it then. Did have it come down one day and it shook me up!! Luckily there was no damage to the antenna or the car. Hoping for good weather conditions for The Big Net!!!

Let me get this right, the actual antenna is 11m is length? It would shake anyone up with that crashing down around your car!
How about a horizontal (droopy) dipole? Not sure if you're familiar with this antenna, but it's one we sometimes use in the Army.
I was thinking of starting out a bit cheaper with a £20 Silver Rod.
Have you got any pics of your set up?

Found the Hustler RM-S Series Resonator 11m for £22, seems like a good price. Have also seen it for £30 too.
It says that it's for single band use so does that mean it won't work for AM? Can you only use it for FM on 27mhz?

NO! It's not 11m long!! It's for the 11m band (27mhz CB Band).... We call the next band 10m (28mhz HAM Band). The actual super resonators aren't that long - it's the mast that's the big bit!!! Well over 6 foot all together on top of the roof of the car. All the bits are sold separately - the special mount, the mast, the resonators and super resonators.
By the way, I chose the super resonator 'cause they have a bigger bandwith and are better. And you can use them for FM, AM AND USB/LSB (sideband) - they're single-band as in only for one set of frequencies.

Have since found out that they're not 11m in length!!!
I looked at the resonators on a website and was again educated by learning that he antenna isn't call the resonator but the resonator is only part of the antenna and you have to buy them in kit form.
I like sound of spending £20 -£25 on a base station silver rod type of antenna for my first foray into the 'unknown'! Probably 1/2 wavelength.
Will be trying some low level DX'ing this Friday. I'll not be going up any hill but I'll be hitting the coastline here in in Swansea to see if anything comes across the water!

Event featured on The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/10/28/uk_cb/
Can I suggest that we all contact our local radio/tv stations and ask them if they can mention the event on their local news shows?
I have contacted Capital North East, Tyne Tees TV and BBC Look North.
Send them 'The Big Net' banner as well!
Fingers crossed for more publicity!!!!
