Hi Matt,
It is hard to say exactly as it depends on conditions and local terrain. But with a decent mobile antenna you should be able to expect up to 10 - 15 miles.
However as your friend says it is possible to speak to people much further away but it depends on the atmospheric conditions being right. This only happens every so often though.

The maximum CB was designed for is 20 miles, with line of sight reception and transmission, and completely perfect conditions. I THINK.
as andy says depends on coditions and terrain if you are high up you get a lot further friend of mine is at 700 feet with home base set up we talked 27 miles last friday but using a wilson on a boot mount

To be honest glass mount antennas are really only an option when there is no other way of mounting an antenna. i.e. if you have a fibreglass vehicle.
Therefore the range isnt brilliant. Maybe up to 3-4 miles max.

no unfortunetly not also it is too close to the radio ariel which landrover so kindly dumped in the middle of my roofstampman wrote:is there no way you can mount it to your light bar
On top of the Lickey Hills in Bromsgrove, on a piece of carpet with a Rotel 240 pushing 4 watts, a Ford Escort Mk1 sat a few feet away providing the power on a 6ft lead to the cigarette lighter socket, a 5/8 wave Silver Rod attached to a 4ft pole which was tied to stumps surrounding the car park, we easily got 60 miles that day..and had people coming from miles around because they didn't believe we were there transmitting like that lol. Wish I'd have taken a photo (The things you do when you're young eh?
). The higher you are, the bigger the aerial, the more power you have = the further you'll get as a rule. However, I have spoken to someone in Portugal easily on a 9lb'der when the propagation was up...bouncing off the ionosphere just from 4 watts from my Thunderpole Mk1, and have heard an American on non- legal FM but couldn't get back to him, so it's sometimes luck and good old Mother Nature!
Freelanders eh, I got a boot mount and fastened it down the side of the back door, and ran the cable thorugh the doorseal. got a 6' springer ariel on it and it works quite well, plus it looks quite cool aswell!! 8)
If at first you don't suceed, sod it.

so much for the glass mount, blooming thing was on for only 3 months and now its up in the yorkshire moors some where and not attached to the vehicle. I think time for a roof bar mount since santa treated my freelander
