Has anybody tested the President Johnson II?

Is the auto squelch good?
Is the filter good?
Is the scanner good?

Is it the best radio on the market?

Many thanks.

Never had the Intek but the Johnson II looks, feels and works absolutely great for me.

And now it fires out through a Wilson 1000 instead of a Springer, it performs even better.

President Johnson II from Uniden is there best AM/FM radio for the last 10 years in my opinion. The ASC is the best from the series at the moment, beats both the Walker and also the Jackson II in that respect. The build is Uniden so you know that its gonna work

Intek, these are made by Maxon in Thailand and sometimes the workmanship can be slap dash. I bought a new Intek yesterday and the top was scratched and the screws not inside properly and this was a sealed unit.

Saying that:

Both have the hidden bands inside them, Intek you keep all the legal channels and with the Johnson II you will loose these.

All in All, an excellent Radio the Johnson II and Good for the Intek. President has now 30 years with Uniden made stuff and am sure a long way to go

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum :-Wave

I agree with your comments about the Johnson II, it is a very good radio. It is made in China as is the Intek M760.

Thunderpole are the exclusive UK importers of Intek CB Radios. We are surprised that you describe their workmanship as slap dash and that your recent, sealed purchase had a scratched top and loose screws. We take comments like these very seriously.

Intek have been an exceptionally reliable brand for us over the last 3 years. Where did you purchase your new Intek from? Was it a UK shop? If you are unhappy with the state of the radio we will be happy to contact the shop that supplied you with the unit.

Andy

What a kind gesture Andy!

I'm impressed.

You very seldom see that level of customer care anymore!

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the welcome to the forum. The radio was actually a Maxon Made 495power and not the series that are from China. The chinese ones are made in the same place as the Alan 121 and this is exceptional build quality. Sadly, sometimes Maxon are not the best with there QC. This has been proved with some radios not having correctly etched name on them, screws not fitting flush and some other issues that I noticed, and indeed Maxon have commented on in past calls with them in Thailand.

Intek have come from nowhere and are indeed now one of the leaders in the area of CB. I was in a call with them yesterday and seems there are more good things on the way from them in the future.

Intek have now in my opinion the best ASC working! It was once the domain of President who have there world patent on the initial design from the engineer Albert Bertrana and I have seen a demonstration from him of the ASC in 2006 and the man is indeed a real genius. So now, how Maxon and the Chinese makers of Intek have implimented it is something more defined and sharp that was with the Presidents in the last few radios. It seems they maybe have done something with filtering or whatever they have done it has worked and has worked well.

I have here the M550 Power, M495 Power, M795 Power, M110, M150,M760 and the H520 and they are all workers, and indeed they all have there great features and sadly some floors too (like all radio equipment) The new 795 and 495 have indeed the best made boards, and the ASC is exceptionally good. I have tested 3 radios here, side by side and the Inteks are opening quicker and more reliable than some others.

DO not get me wrong, and in some reviews to be published the Intek is indeed pound for pound a great radio, well engineered and well thought through. The Johnson II is in another league in the pricing compared to the Inteks (well on the mainland here at least) and thus is classed differently.

I have serial 000001 of the 795 Power and it was serial 00008 that was marked, however it seems that it was muled for website photos from an importer on the way (so the story goes) and it was them that sealed it and never expected to ship it, however limited stock means it was shipped for sale and not kept behind

Regards

Simon

Hi Simon,
How many factories are there of Maxon?
Do you know the construction of the Maxon companies? Have you ever been there?
What test equipment have you used or are you using at the moment?
Give us a description how you tested the CB radios...put the details on the forum, so we can see where your comment is based on.
Is it that important that you can open a CB radio quickly? For some "Screwdriver" specialists it is a must...
Give us the facts of your tests, I find it very interesting, but I want to know where the tests are based on...everybody can do a test...but I want to know the background of a test....that's what we technicians like to check!

Are you a radio technician?

Hi Mike

Test equipment is rhodes and Schwarz mostly, this being signal generator and also equipment for power, calibration and also for test points. Signal tested with 50uV input as you know this allows a signal of roughly S9 on any given radio. This is obtained at 2 locations as to make sure that the first is accurate. In this area, we have a couple of premises where there are technicians and he carrys out a test of some 20 points. I HAVE NOT any huge test equipment here, therefore pay someone to make a test for me.

signal
audio
power
calibration
receive
alignment

ASC was tested with the injection of a tone, some radios open with this, some do not. The given uV injected sadly i have not at my disposal. Enough is to say that when the ASC was functioning well there is like a good arch on the screen, fluid movement and the more ragged this becomes the ASC is let down somewhat.

When this is done, the radio in question is given to a local to try in the car, and then afterwards I try it at home for on air reasons as many are simply tested on machines and then thats all. There is no point to look what a machine says, when on air tests are equal as important.

The usual as am sure you know also. Yes, Maxon i know has many divisions, land, business,cb and the like. My initial request was via there general number and from there made a chat with a lady who advised me someone will return my call in the next two weeks as they are on holiday but also confirmed we are happy to speak with you, and we supply 3/4 of the worlds CB Radios.

Is it important to open a radio? Not really. Yes for photos and the like, otherwise as was written many times better to leave alone than to bodge. Never been to Maxon, never confessed to being there and would like to see it sure, I am informed that its an impressive facility there.

This is sadly the best answer that I can give you. I write a piece of paper when the radios are checked, the things what i want to know, and work from that. If you need exact numbers of machines that are used then i can of course ask for you, All that i know is they were all rhodes and schwarz and purchased between 1989-1997 and are in regular use for either repairs/service or indeed some tests when the man is asked to do it for me

Simon

sorry i edited it here to ask what was used most of all. Its a Rhodes & Schwarz cms52, a schlumburger stabilock 4031and some grundig bits like cb6 and cbbr7 but what that is sadly i have not any idea

Just as an innocent follow up. All radios that are here, and are indeed tested or otherwise are owned by myself, and the tests that are carried out for me are made at my cost, not any loan, freebies and the like so I feel that when this is done then a real fair comment can be made. I am not a retailer, not a distributor either. You may also be suprised to hear that there is some dealers here that are not handling Intek as according to them "they are crap Maxon stuff" and as they feel not good reliability they not bother. So, stick with what they know, Albrecht, Alan, President and Emperor. Some of which are indeed also Maxon produced. Proudly made with care in Thailand being the slogan that i was once told.

FOR ME, this is wrong as each should be judged on merits and not over heard whispers or indeed on air comments. Intek have made some excellent in roads, and now with the high power series they will make more as the radios are indeed good. BUT, there are two sides to all, there is always good, bad and the indifferent. I have had good, I have had bad and also indifferent. Thats the same in anything. I have a BMW car, and that has had over 20,000 euro of warranty repairs in 2 years and 100,000km to the electronics and navigation etc. Don't stop you from wanting another and also enjoying the one that you have either.

People tell me that my face must always be smiling with all the freebies and bribes people send me to get a good review. That is why i have 2x different places to test them, different locals to test the radios and then finally i try it and see if they are right, wrong or biased in anyway. Not fool proof but the best way i can do with the radios i have and the available money. Hope you see where am coming from? This is the best way i have found so far to be impartial. If you do not buy it there is always the lingering shadow of whether its fair or not, even if cast iron fair the review is made. Thats why better to own, than to loan.

And i recall Mike, I believe you are the man from Maxon if am correct? Have i admit not a good memory but believe have read your name some time ago.. If am wrong then i apologise but if am right then i would as before love to know more about Maxon, have many questions to ask.

Thank you for the words extremedave but there are many others more informed than me that make this hobby a great one indeed. Words are nothing without the dealers, the manufacturers and of course the insiders that let us know the details long time in advance so we can save some $$ to buy the new stuff.

Simon TM1 has a great site, is well informed and has great information there. He is not biased and is direct. I have a lot of respect for him and the work he does.

Jackson II is a good radio, yes there are some things we would all like it to have that it does not. But, thats why there is more than one brand of radio on the market. I see there are even used ones now available on the market. Hope to read you more, and goodluck with the saving. Whether you choose Jackson II, Johnson II, Intek 760 or Intek 495 they are all top radios.

See you soon!
