Hi all, just to pose a question, are the old AM rigs any use these days? I mean we're talking 20year old + technology, so it's gonna be well out of date and probably pretty fragile by now.

So back in the day the Cobra 148 was the top dog, and the Stalker 9 was a close second ( at least in my neck of the woods) and you still see a few coming up on eblag, but are they actually worth buying, and can they be repaired/updated/modified at sensible cost??

I used to have a Stalker 9, and it may still be somewhere around, as I don't recall selling it, I expect it's with the K40 power mike I bought :?

I there anything on the market today that would take their place?

the superstar 3900 is a updated cobra 148
a very nice radio at a good price i got mine £119 brand new
a very nice easy to use sideband cb radio ,when the skip is good you can hear all over the world coming through on the triple 27.555
i would not spend big money on a cobra 148 that prob has been messed with.... when you can buy a superstar for not much more money and does a lot more than the 148........
am is not used much some truckers seem to use it

They used to put piggyback boards on to give the UK 40 channels and wire it to an aux switch, or maybe the pa switch, so I see no reason they can't do the same nowerdays.

I still say it's ugly, and they should have spent some money on a redesign, and put the mic lead on the front.

the cost of a redesign are huge and pointless as they already make the SUPERSTAR SS-158EDX and would only put up the cost of a radio up 2 fold

if you want a mic lead at the front i would buy a RANGER RCI-2950 DX very nice radio will be buying one soon just has a crap signal meter

or there is the Magnum 257 , i would not buy the new blue versions of these as im told there very very bad

or there is also the PRESIDENT JACKSON 11 ASC ,needs to be moded for ssb no freq counter

its all about personal taste
some like retro looking radios some like modern looking radios

the magnum s9 radios are nice but twice the price
