Hello,

I'm looking to get started with CB radio, the main reason for this is to use it for communicating between checkpoints whilst organising expeditions for scouts. I'll be getting a couple of mobile rigs. Will i need anything special to transmit/receive up to and above 10 miles over the moors or is this even possible?

I've been looking at a Midland 38 and Also an Intek H-520 with a car kit so i can walk with it also, what sort of antenna is best for both the car and the handheld?

10 miles from peak to peak would be possable using wilson 100 on car and midland 42 with 12 volt battery and larger antenna on it but remember cb will not go through hills

Thanks for the advise! i didn't realise that cb wouldn't go through/over hills! That might cause some issues! Is the Midland 42 a better radio than the Intek 520 then?

Are there any forms of radio comms that would go through hills?

think they are about on a par in performance if your second checkpoint is a car then you might have a chance

Mobile phone would be ideal! Sadly thats what we use at the moment and it means that we can only place checkpoints at places where there is a mobile signal, which on exmoor is not many places!

Has anybody used the Orbitor Antenna's? Is it worth going for the centre load one that is longer?

no go for the base loaded wilson or sirio 3000/4000 wil give a flatter signal radiation and longer range
